Managing design(er(s))

Management I would say is not as difficult as organization.
Or is it vice versa?

Well without getting into the complexity of words let me come to the point.
While reading through the posts on IXDA I came across this nice site of Luke.

Look at the way he has designed his website.

Also take a look at the navigation system.
All the elements of design as mentions by Jesse Garrett >> have been truthfully followed.
The site ends up in my inspiration section.
And following articles which are on design management that can be followed when I land up in the industry are really good.
Though I have just skimmed through them, the visuals meant a lot.

Friday Movie - Rashomon

Let me tell you one thing first. I am not a movie freak neither do I watch movie to arrive at certain judgement. It either entertains me or not. I have not fallen in the trap of analyzing the movies before, as done by critics and artists. Though I do notice sound, special effects, twisting and turnings in the movie, camera angle and something like it. To cut it down, I may not be able to get in long hours of discussion on a movie and it's characteristics.

IDC has a tradition to screen two movies (animation and regular) on Friday evening. Yesterday it was Rashomon by Akira Kurosawa screened. I joined the film nearly 20 minutes late. Because I knew the story of the movie (rest apart the suspense), I could start. The movie is shown from the perspectives of 4 different people. The same story is told by 4 characters of the movie. Though whatever they told must be right is their sense it differed for the audience. However at many points they seemed to be same one.
The story in a nutshell is like this. A couple is going through the jungle and famous bandit of Rashomon (town/city) Tajomaro attacks them. He ties the husband and rapes the wife. After the incidence the husband is found dead. Later on they are moved to the court for trial and their they describe what's been there.
And all this is again retold by a person who himself witnessed the scene.
The best part in the movie I like is when the man says that "there is nothing like honesty or humane, it's because man wants to hide all bad stuff he has resorted to these words and wear cloak of it"... and so on.
Movie is black and white and at many points it seemed to be funny too. Like when there was a fight going between husband and bandit they were continuously falling down. Now this is not expected from people from the land of kung fu.

Anyways in a nutshell I liked the movie and it entertained me.

Look who all are celebrating Indian Independence day

Happy Independence Day

India got freedom before 60 years on 15th August 1947. To represent a country it needs to have it's identity. This can be in form of culture, heritage and the history that it has carried so far. But this is not enough. The knowledge may not be known to all the world over. Moreover it has to be language independent. Hence comes the role of flag. A national flag represents the identity of a nation. It's pride, culture and virtues.
This initiated me to look in to the history of Indian Flag. Well designing it would be tough task then. To represent an integral India when it was divided geographically.
Some of the good links are here

And one interesting thing was also found.
There are rules as to where the flag can be hoisted represented by a 3x2 matrix.
This is called Vexillological Symbol.
  • civil flag – Flown by citizens on land.
  • state flag – Flown on public buildings.
  • war flag – Flown on military buildings.
  • civil ensign – Flown on private vessels (fishing craft, cruise ships, yachts, etc).
  • state ensign – Flown on unarmed government vessels.
  • war ensign – Flown on warships
More of this at Wikipedia >>
Indian flag can be furled on citizens land, public buildings and military buildings.
This gives an immediate information about the code of Hoisting Indian Flag. That's information theory.

Processing

Processing is said to be the programming language for designers. It is one of the most lethal weapon with designer to make dynamic stuffs. It's based on Java language. More information here >>
So I thought why not I should also try it out.

The constructs are very easy for a beginner. And the library of functions is very concise and intuitive from the name.

And that's my one of the earliest experiments with Processing. I have taken a square stroke and moving it to and fro and at the same time rotating it. I have lowered the transparency of the stroke to give it a neon feeling.

Very cool effect.
This tool is generally used for interactive installations and also for data visualizations.
